  45. Microsoft(R) NetMeeting(R) enables real-time audio, video, and 
  46. data communication over the Internet. 
  47.  
  48. In order to use NetMeeting, you must have the following
  49. configuration:
  50.  
  51. - Microsoft Windows(R) 95 or Windows(R) 98
  52. - At least a 486/66 processor with 8 megabytes of RAM 
  53.   (Pentium with 12 MB of RAM recommended)
  54.  
  55.     --or--

  57. - Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4.0
  58. - At least a 486/66 processor with 16 megabytes of RAM 
  59. - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later required to enable 
  60.   sharing applications on Windows NT
  61.  
  62.  
  63. IMPORTANT NOTES:
  64.  
  65.   * NetMeeting 2.11 does not run on Windows 3.1 or beta 
  66.     versions of Windows 98 older than Beta 3. 
  67.  
  68.   * It is strongly recommended that you uninstall earlier beta 
  69.     versions of NetMeeting before installing NetMeeting 2.11.
  70.  
  71. - If you use special characters, such as "\\" or double-byte 
  72.   characters, when typing the installation location for NetMeeting 
  73.   during setup, NetMeeting may not install correctly.
  74.  
  75. - NetMeeting no longer supports placing calls over IPX or over 
  76.   PSTN.
  77.  
  78. - NetMeeting works best with a fast Internet connection (a 28.8k-
  79.   baud or faster modem or a local area network).
  80.  
  81. - To use the audio features of NetMeeting, you need a sound card, 
  82.   speakers, and a microphone.
  83.  
  84. - To send video with NetMeeting, you need either a video-capture 
  85.   card and camera or a video camera that connects through your 
  86.   computer's parallel (printer) port. You will not be able to 
  87.   send video on some computers with a processor slower than a 
  88.   Pentium.
  89.  
  90.   Computers with a bidirectional (ECP or EPP) parallel port will 
  91.   perform noticeably better with parallel port video cameras than 
  92.   computers with a unidirectional parallel port.
  93.  
  94.   Cameras that connect to a video-capture card will use less of 
  95.   your computer's processor than cameras that connect through your 
  96.   computer's parallel port. It is recommended that you do not use 
  97.   a color parallel port camera unless your computer is at least a 
  98.   Pentium 133.
  99.  
  100. - The application-sharing feature may not perform well while you 
  101.   are using audio and video and are connected over a slow 
  102.   connection. Additionally, you might experience "choppy" audio 
  103.   while using video.
  104.  
  105.   The default setting for video over a 28.8-baud modem connection 
  106.   is medium quality. To change this setting, click the Tools menu, 
  107.   click Options, click the Video tab, and then change the Video 
  108.   Quality option.
  109.  
  110. - Windows NT users will be able to share applications if they have
  111.   installed Service Pack 3 or later for Windows NT 4.0. 
  112.

  122. To uninstall NetMeeting
  123. -----------------------
  124. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  125.  
  126. 2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click NetMeeting, and
  127.    then click Add/Remove Programs.
  128.  
  129. 3. If a dialog box appears asking if you want to restart your 
  130.    computer, click Yes.
  131.

  134. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  135.  
  136. 2. On the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, and then click 
  137. Details.
  138.  
  139. 3. Clear the NetMeeting check box.

  141.  
  142. Warnings and Known Bugs
  143. -----------------------
  144. - If you uninstall Windows NT Service Pack 3 or later after installing 
  145.   NetMeeting 2.11, you will receive an error message when you 
  146.   restart your computer. To prevent this, carry out the following 
  147.   steps:
  148.  
  149.   1. Close the error message window.
  150.  
  151.   2. In the Display properties dialog box, click Cancel. 
  152.  
  153.   3. In Control Panel, click the Devices icon.
  154.  
  155.   4. Click mnmdd, and then click the Startup button.
  156.  
  157.   5. Change the Startup Type from System to Disabled, and then 
  158.      click OK.
  159.  
  160.   6. Restart your computer so the change can take effect.
  161.  
  162. - If, after enabling application sharing on the NT version of NetMeeting, 
  163.   your computer faults, you may have an incompatible display driver 
  164.   and will need to do one of the following:
  165.   
  166.   - Uninstall / reinstall NetMeeting and not enable application sharing
  167.  
  168.   - Upgrade the driver
  169.  
  170.   - Use a generic display driver
  171.  
  172.   - Install a different video adapter
  173.  
  174.   - Install the current release of the NT Service Pack.
  175.  
  176.  
  177. USING NETMEETING
  178. ==========================
  179.  
  180. - NetMeeting includes support for the H.323 audio and video conferencing
  181.   standard. NetMeeting can be used to place calls to and receive calls
  182.   from products that are H.323-compatible, including the Intel Internet
  183.   Video Phone. With appropriate equipment and services that are currently
  184.   under development by third parties, NetMeeting can place a call to 
  185.   a telephone using an H.323 gateway.

  187. - Microsoft maintains the following directory servers on the 
  188.   Internet:
  189.  
  190.   ils.microsoft.com
  191.   ils1.microsoft.com
  192.   ils2.microsoft.com
  193.   ils3.microsoft.com
  194.   ils4.microsoft.com
  195.   ils5.microsoft.com

  197.   You can use one of these even if it does not appear in the list 
  198.   of servers in the wizard.

  200.   You can also use the following directory servers not maintained 
  201.   by Microsoft:

  205.   ils.family.four11.com
  206.  
  207.   NOTE
  208.   * You will not be able to use these servers to locate people on 
  209.     the Internet if you connect to the Internet through a proxy 
  210.     server that does not support Remote WinSock. 
  211.  
  212. - Audio and video work only over TCP/IP and with one other person 
  213.   at a time. 
  214.  
  215. - If you use this version of NetMeeting to call someone who 
  216.   is using NetMeeting 2.0, the call-switching feature may not work 
  217.   correctly.
  218.   
  219. - This version of NetMeeting enables up to 32 users to share an 
  220.   application. However if a computer running NetMeeting 2.0 is in 
  221.   the conference and more than three users are sharing, that computer 
  222.   will not be able to host an application. In addition, you can be 
  223.   connected to only one other person with audio and video at a time.
  224.   
  225.   The total number of people who can successfully participate 
  226.   in your meeting will vary based on available network bandwidth 
  227.   and the speed of the participants' computers.
  228.  
  229. - Some activities cause large amounts of data to be sent between 
  230.   the computers in your meeting (for example, speaking and sharing 
  231.   several applications while transferring a large file). In extreme 
  232.   cases, this might cause computers in the meeting to become very 
  233.   slow. To remedy this, stop one or more of the meeting activities.
  234.  
  235. - If you try to make a TCP/IP call on your local area network or 
  236.   through a proxy server and MSN or Dial-Up Networking displays a 
  237.   connection dialog box, you can disable this by clicking the 
  238.   Internet icon in Control Panel and then making sure that Auto-
  239.   Dial is not selected.
  240.  
  241. - Sharing of DirectX, OpenGL, MS-DOS(R), and graphics-intensive 
  242.   games and AVIs does not work well and is not supported.
